NYS Teachers for Progress Comment on NYSUT 2026 RA Resolutions
NYSUT just completed its 2026 Representative Assembly (RA) in Albany. Local unions proposed 40 resolutions. Of these 40 resolutions, only one addressed worker wages in any way: a resolution in support of the WNBA Players Association and advancing pay equity, racial justice, and fair collective bargaining in women’s sports.
How is it possible that none of NYSUT’s proposed resolutions address teacher salaries in any way? Teacher salaries across the state have been declining for years, relative to inflation, due to Cuomo’s tax cap, which has forced local school districts into austerity budgets.
Why would NYSUT spend its time, energy, and political capital on a resolution like this? NYSUT needs to get its priorities straight: teachers’ wages, benefits, and conditions!
We call on NYSUT to focus on restoring democratic control to school districts by repealing the tax cap. We call on NYSUT to embrace the goal of ending the tiered retirement system and bring all teachers under the current Tier 4 benefits. We call on NYSUT to join the movement to pass a single-payer healthcare system in NY (New York Health Act).
